Brazil’s Next Top Model

Top Model Pictures
Brazilian models are the country’s most popular fashion export, and, aside from Gisele, who is probably busy basking in post-engagement bliss, many of the best-known names are in full glamorous effect on the runways here at Fashion Rio. Familiar faces Isabeli Fontana, Viviane Orth, Bruna Tenorio, and a bleached-blonde Ana Claudia Michels (in comeback mode after walking last season at Givenchy) all walked for Rio grande dame Mara Mac’s show. But the real news on this catwalker-dotted landscape is fresh face Carolina Thaler, who has been everywhere this week. If model scouts have any sense, she should be promptly shipped off to New York for castings next month—she’s guaranteed to be the next big Brazilian thing.

Fashion furore over 14yo model

Model Fashion
Plans to put a 14-year-old Polish model centre stage at this year's Australian Fashion Week have outraged fashionistas.
Vogue magazine has reportedly refused to feature Monika Jagaciak because of her age.
And Marie Claire editor Jackie Frank wants to know why organisers have chosen an international model to represent the event.
"I think [it] is disappointing that the face of Australian Fashion Week is not an Australian girl, when there are so many fabulous Aussie girls doing so well throughout the world," she said.
Frank thinks the minimum age for models starring in the event should be 16.
"We all know that a 14-year-old is still a baby ... 14 is too young ... At Marie Claire we won't use a 14-year-old because it doesn't appeal to our readers," she said.
Australian Fashion Week organisers have defended the move.
According to their guidelines, models under the age of 16 can strut on the catwalk as long as they are chaperoned and have the full support from the parents.
Frank says there is always a way to justify everything.
"The girls from Czechoslovakia, Poland, Russia - they start very early," she said.
"I know that everyone is saying that she [Jagaciak] is going to be accompanied by her parents, she is going to be chaperoned, but you've got to understand that a lot of these girls are actually pulling their families out of poverty.
"Of course the parents are going to be supporting them and pushing them because someone of them end up supporting not only their family, but an extended family."

America's Next Top Model: Jaslene Gonzalez Spotted in Runway Show
It's no secret: America's Next Top Model is a fast-track to a fame of sorts, but for many, it's mainly the fame of being known as “that girl from America's Next Top Model.” It's debatable if it helps in the slightest with an actual modeling career, and as some former contestants recently told us here at BuddyTV, some of the modelettes actually think it's a hindrance to starting a solid high-fashion modeling career.

But if Jaslene Gonzalez wasn't going to let not getting cast for Cycle 7 stop her from coming back to win Cycle 8, one can suspect she's not going to let her America's Next Top Model fame impede her progress to actually become a working model. She is, after all, the Cha Cha Diva.

And a recent appearance shows she might just be making headway into the edgier side of fashion that gives young models and designers the kind of credibility that can help offset the reality television experience. We've got news on that sighting, and as an extra-added bonus, we also have images from her Elite Model show card.

Fashion blog Fashionista.com reports that Jaslene was spotted last week walking in the GenArt fashion show. GenArt, they report, “gives funds to emerging designers and functions as the fashion world's version of training wheels.”

GenArt events are apparently a looser, less-formal event that some of the other shows happening last week at New York's Fashion Week. The audience knows the designers are young and up-and-coming, and so the expectation is more for excitement and energy than technical perfection. This is a crowd, Fashionista says, “that actually cheers and screams, high-school play style, at the end of [the] collection.”

So, they go on to report, Jaslene got her own round of applause and appreciative shouts when she appeared. Booking this show is an ideal event for the aspiring model, who seems determined to make it in actual fashion, not just the periphery. By working with younger designers – who will probably be less concerned about her pedigree and more excited about the exposure and maybe even a little of the kitsch factor of working with an America's Next Top Model – she can continue to build her presence in real fashion as she waits for the chance to make major runway shows.

She has also walked in a show for the Armani Exchange, an affordable subsidiary of the Giorgio Armani brand that is aimed at younger buyers mainly in the American market. She will also be appearing on a major billboard for clothing brand Lot 29 and appearing in a cameo role in an independent film called Miss Average.

And as promised, the images here are from her Elite show card, her industry calling card. What do you think? Will Jaslene have what it takes to compete with the Jessica Stams, Agyness Deyns and Gemma Wards of the fashion world?

Glamorous Spring/Summer Fashion Trends 2009

Here are the trends that are making the noise in fashion styles this 2009.

Tribal / Ethnic Trend

As it did with bohemian inspired looks as one of the first 2009 fashion trends, fashion has gone global for Spring/Summer 2009, with designers drawing inspiration from every corner of the globe. A look which started with Yves Saint Laurent's legendary safari jump suits has been re-interpreted this season, and designers from Christopher Kane to Paul Smith have looked to Africa and the Orient for their muse.

One of the trends we’ve seen in Fall Winter 2009 2010 runways were trim and sculptural coats with a retro feel. Forties style coats with cinched waists and round shoulders were noticeable in Milan Fashion Week.
