Fashion Art Illustration

Fashion illustrations are responsible for injecting the fantasy and glamour to the fashion concept thought up by a designer. These are drawn by illustrators who add their own element into the illustration while projecting the designer’s vision. Several Fashion Illustrators are just as famous as the designers. However, the recent years saw a decline in the field of fashion illustration. Modern Fashion Illustration seemed to be losing out to modern fashion photography.

However, there is a revival in the craft of Modern Fashion Illustration as people have begun to realise that photographs can never capture the fantastical element of a good illustration. The mystery and allure that illustrations add to any design is not possible with photographs. However, in order to adapt to the changing world, modern fashion illustrations are more digital illustrations than hand drawn.

Fashion Art IllustrationHand drawn illustrations always have their own charm, but digital illustrations offer easier editing and more options in a lesser amount of time. Modern Fashion illustrations that are digitally created can be in any style of illustration and can be manipulated easily. Most illustrations include photographic elements as well to give it a look of a collage.

The advantage that fashion illustration has over photography is that it helps in the visualisation of a concept that has not yet been made, while photography requires a physical object to be photographed. These allow the designers to sell the dream rather than sell a garment. As the renewed interest in all things hand-made makes a revival, modern fashion illustration evolves into an art form that can be both digital and hand-made.

Fashion isn't art - I would say. At least not automatically, but that doesn't mean it can't be. There are a lot of examples to proove the art ability of certain fashion designs (guess we would have to define what art is first!?). But what is it, that makes fashion arty? Is it the not wearability? The pushing-it-to-the-edges use of certain fabrics - like wool in the case of Sandra Backlund - the hardcore knitter?
