Fashion Week Fall 2008 trend watch: Turning purple

USA FASHION WEEK
Nobody really knows how this all happened, but there's a purple haze hanging over Fashion Week in Manhattan and it's spreading.
It was spotted last Friday -- the first day of this eight-day event showcasing fall's new designs -- and we're definitely keeping an eye on it. The color purple is overtaking the runways, popping up as the new "it" hue everywhere. It's flashing peace signs in the Miss Sixty collection (inspired by the haute hippie Bohemian look of the '60s and '70s); it's flirting in a flapper-inspired fringed dress in the DKNY collection; and it's making accents in plaid trousers and jackets for men in offerings by R. Scott French.

Designers usually swear their inspirations are all their own and that they really don't know how they all come up with certain ideas at the same time, therefore giving birth to a trend. Unless there's just something in the water here -- maybe grape Kool-Aid -- this purple thing blows the lid off designer claims that they don't spy on each other.
If we're to keep them at their word, perhaps this has to do with the move away from the neutrals and other quiet tones that took over a couple of seasons back. The thinking then was that the public was in a terrorism-shock mindset and really wasn't in the mood for anything bold. At last September's spring previews, vivid colors came back, and maybe designers are expressing their optimistic outlook on the future this election year with something bright, cheerful, regal.
Whatever the case, it's being shown in so many forms that Barney and the Purple People Eater would get indigestion. In addition to the ones mentioned earlier, here's a rundown of just some of the designers we have seen use this traditionally regal color as their muse so far: Rock & Republic, Baby Phat, Perry Ellis, Jeremy Laing, Z Zegna, Tracy Johnson and Reyes.
USA FASHION WEEK
We've seen purple pop up everywhere, with Miss Sixty's show on Sunday night being the purplest of them all, starting with the purple program folder. The first outfit was topped with a purple wool chunky knit beret, the second featured a grape mohair oversized knit shawl, a purple, brown and tan cotton cap sleeve tee and purple metallic nylon clutch with ruched detailing.
Miss Sixty displayed even more purpleitis in corduroy high-waisted shorts, a leather and velvet handbag, a knit tunic, plastic sunglasses with studded temples, leather boots with tonal piping and buckle detail, a embossed-reptile ruched leather belt, leather ankle boots with multi-strap detail, denim dip-dyed skinny trousers, and purple tie-dye tights!

As a professional photographer, I see it everyday. I have young male and female models, some beautiful and some with a definate fashion look or some with body measurements to fit the requirements for glamour modeling. But, I can also tell that some will never grace the runway or mazazine cover because of one thing -- The Proper Attitude!!

There are certain attributes you must have in order to become a teen models no matter how pretty or handsome, no matter if you are a teenager or adult, interested in commercial or fashion work. Here are a few suggestions and questions to ask in getting started as a model.

Most teen models who are interested in posing for model pics for the fun of it have no clue about the business end of entertainment. They don't realize talent scouts and photography companies are very intolerant when approached by an amateur who shows up late, dresses in the wrong way or even wears heavy makeup to the open call interview. All these things are important and are covered in the lessons for modeling on this website.

Let's face some facts ... Ford, IMG and Elite Modleing Agencies and beauty products are most likely going to turn you down when you apply. Now, I am certainly not implying that you shouldn't try; on the contrary. I'm just saying that some of the biggest supermodels in the business were turned down before they became successful models and stars.

So, you need to not accept failure as failure but only as a way to improve your craft, learn what they want, and try again. How long should you keep trying? As long as it takes!

Practice your poses and expressions daily but also promote yourself with consistency. A more steady stream of modeling jobs comes to those who work at it. Develop a plan of action and stick with it. You can find many good pictures galleries of fashion models.

Taking the first step to a modeling career demands that you take a good look at yourself. Two points: What is your area of interest? You might be interested in walking the catwalk, become one of those women posing in swimsuits as a glamour model or maybe you just want to do commercial or promotional work like you see at trade shows or even car races.

Once you determine your model interest area, make sure you know the requirements for each area. If your measurements or abilities are not suited for one type of modeling, change gears and find your second choice in your profession.

Raya's clients already include many top fashion magazines, including Harper's Bazaar and Icon, with which she is very proud to have worked, and cosmetics and clothing brands, such as Lolita Lempicka, Daniel Hechter and Vuarnet. Despite the impressive client line-up, however, she feels that she can "still do 100 times better" and says: "It's great when people like my photographs, but for me it is still not enough. I want to get to the top and then it will be easier for me to have access to the magazines that have big budgets to really do what I want to do with top models and haute couture."

Desperate times call for fabulous fashions, and designers paid heed to the call this spring.  From glittery what-recession...? flapper frocks (Alberta Ferretti; Aquilano.Rimondi) to Ali Baba pants (Ralph Lauren), turbans (Dries Van Noten), 80s high glam (Balmain), and liquid mercury goddess gowns (YSL), despite dismal headlines, the show went on. Style.com just released their Spring 2009 Trend Report, highlighting the season's Top 6 trends:

Latest Designer Clothing Trend: Everything ’80s

designer clothing
If you’ve had the feeling that fashion shows this year have looked like everything “old” is new again – you’re absolutely right! Designer clothing has turned to the decade of the 1980s for this season’s inspiration.

Fashion mavens say these are the top trends for this year’s designer clothing:

It’s The ’80s Again!

Designers have chosen to look back almost 30 years for this year’s clothing influences. Expect to see lots of neon colors in both women’s and men’s shirts, along with velvet bustiers for evening wear and dresses with poufy skirts and sleeves.

The Cocoon Coat Is Back

Look for women to appear like giant butterflies as the cocoon coat with its wing-shaped design makes its cyclical reappearance. This style is not for every woman; those with a long, lean shape carry it off best.

Gray and Black Dominate the Scene…

However, anyone can wear another very sophisticated trend of the season: lots and lots of layers of gray and black. One of the great advantages to a wardrobe of designer clothing built around this trend is that you’ll never have to worry that everything coordinates!

& So Do Pink and Chartreuse

Two bold colors are this season’s fashion focus: pink and chartreuse, but not together, thankfully. Neon pink – shocking pink, fuschia, coral pink, you name – was seen on runways in dresses, shirts, skirts and accessories. Chartreuse likewise lit up catwalks from Milan to New York, especially in silk dinner suits and blouses. While chartreuse can be a tricky color for some women because of their complexions, there’s usually a shade of bold pink that works for anyone. Shop until you find it.

Controversial Fur- Should you or Shouldn’t you?

Another designer clothing trend this year appears chic, but it’s also quite controversial. Designers are using lots of fur – real fur – both for decoration and for entire outfits. Animal-rights activists are sure to protest, so you might want to opt for fake fur on your outfits, especially if you’re on a budget.

Let the Shoulders Dominate

Designers also seem to think that the shoulder is the sexiest body part for this season. Some tops and dresses looked as if they were unfinished because of the number of slits, slashes and cutouts seen on fashion models. Expect cold shoulders if opting for this design.

If shoulders aren’t exposed this year, they’re likely to be padded or extended well enough to look like an American football linebacker. Yes, the big-shoulder look is back, and we mean big, bigger, biggest. Some of these broad-shoulder designer clothing styles also have pointy ends, so be careful not to pierce any passers-by.

Go Metallic

Metallics have been popular over several seasons recently, and this year they’ll be seen more in the daytime. Many designer outfits paired shiny shirts with gray pants, or sequined dresses or skirts with gray coats. The neutral gray color seems to give metallics even more shine and sparkle. Designer handbags and shoes also retain recently popular metallic finishes.

Get out those Thigh High Boots

There’s another echo from the ’80s that might cause some women to dig their old Thighmasters out of the closet: thigh-high boots! Naturally paired with short skirts, this designer clothing trend was seen most often in warm tan or caramel-colored leather.

Top it All Up in Style!

Finally, the accessory of the season: Hats, hats, and more hats. They range from demure cloches to wide brims and tall pillars that resemble a science-fiction alien’s costume. Hats also reflect many of the season’s other style trends: bold neon colors, animal prints, a touch of real fur and sophisticated gray and black combinations.

Ladies Fashion Catalogues

 high fashion ladies
A catalog is an organized, detailed, descriptive list of items, arranged systematically under categories or sub-categories. There are many catalogs that are dedicated to women’s clothing and apparel. While some of them are published by independent magazines, many others are brought out by the mail order companies and fashion houses. Fashion houses usually publish their catalogs on seasonal basis, such as to mark the winter, spring, summer or the fall collections, whereas the publishing frequency of independent magazines may vary from monthly to quarterly.
high fashion sets
Women look forward to new catalogs, as they are the best source of information regarding the present and upcoming trends in fashion. These catalogs are used by different people for different purposes. For example, the mail order and retail stores use them to make their regular customers aware of the new range of stock, whereas the designers use them to give ideas to their customers on the basis of what they can design that is more made-to-order.
Fashion High quality ladies fashion
The best part of catalogs is that one can easily find something that suits them, without getting into the hassle of moving from shop to shop. What this means is that even if you are overweight or short of money, all you need to do is to pick up a catalog and see what will fit your body and budget.
High quality ladies fashion
A majority of catalogs work on the formula of attracting women by either showing perfect fittings or curves, or by getting celebrity endorsements. While some of them target the super-rich class of ladies, the others entice common working women by offering a good price for items. Most of the catalogs nowadays have both printed as well as online editions. The online option has made catalog shopping far more affordable and accessible to everyone.
Madeleine Fashion High quality ladies fashion
The great thing about a clothing catalog is that the various publications cater to specific categories of customers, whether that is among the richest women in Hollywood, a leading professional in a multinational corporation, an office executive or a homemaker. Every woman is certain to find a clothing catalog that suits her lifestyle preferences.

Favorite Designer: Mint

I often find inspiration in fashion, clothing, and the things that adorn our bodies. One of my favorite fashion designers is Jodi Arnold of Mint. Her collection is known for its twist on feminine flounce and inspired by vintage patterns, as well as form and fit. Here are a few of my favorite looks from the Mint Spring 2006 Collection...
