Confessions of a Shopaholic Countdown: The Best Fashion Flicks of All Time
With Confessions of a Shopaholic hitting theaters this Friday we've been thinking how few films there are that feature truly inspirational fashion. So from now till D-Day (that's THIS FRIDAY, FEB 13th), we're counting down our fave fashion/fashionista/iconic fashion moment flicks of all time -- and looking forward to adding Confessions of a Shopaholic to our list. So without further adieu...
1. BREAKFAST At TIFFANY'S
She had us at her LBD. Resplendent in a simple black sheath, Audrey Hepburn's "Holly Golightly" was the Empress of Less Is More, prancing through the film in (as aforementioned) chic little dresses, trench coats and flats. Holly's style was in her choice of accessories. Oversize shades, twinkling tiaras, wide-brimmed hats, an endless cigarette holder and ropes of pearls created the mystique of luxe Holly (aka Lula Mae) was going for -- one of the big screen's biggest affirmations of hi-lo.
But back to Audrey. A muse to Givenchy, Ferragamo and Valentino, she looked amazing in EVERYTHING which made for many memorable fashionista moments on the big screen including Two for the Road and the original Sabrina.

And go see Confessions (if you haven't already). It's super-cute -- it's not Isla Fisher shopping for stuff throughout the movie -- and actually quite timely considering the economy and all.

It was a tie thanks to stylist Patricia Field who used wardrobe to create arcs for the characters in both films. Watch each film on mute and you'll see "Devil"s Andy go from fashion naif (with good instincts -- that blue boyfriend sweater Meryl Streep's "Miranda" famously disses and the marmy plaid skirt she wears on her first day at "Runway" became huge trends) to sartorial star dripping in Chanel.
Likewise, in Sex & the City (the series), Field reflected Carrie's maturation from chica about town to author and Vogue contributor using a ratty fur club kid coat, newsboy caps and Jimmy Choos. In the movie, Field chose a mix of grown-up vintage pieces, gladiator platforms, graphic tee-shirt dresses, an over-the-top wedding gown, and a white skirt suit to reflect Carrie's final reconciliation with Big and herself. In these films, fashion was fun, fly... and deep!

#3. BARBARELLA
Barbarella's satirical instigation of the sexual revolution gave us liquid leggings, knee-high boots (worn cuffed), thigh-high boots, blinging leotards, and, yes, it inspired Britney Spears' Oops I Did It Again vinyl jumpsuit. But it looks to have inspired another pop-star's music video style too. Beyonce/Sasha Fierce (by way of Gareth Pugh) brought Barbarella back big time in the video for her single, Diva.

#4. CASABLANCA
Released in the 1940s, there is nothing dated about the looks in Casablanca. The maxi-length skirt suits and cloche hats Ingrid Bergman's character wore are totally making a comeback -- Marc Jacobs referenced her chic short-brimmed hats and suits in his Fall 2007 collection. The head scarves, flowing silhouettes, rich patterns and chunky jewelry inspired by traditional Moroccan fashion hit the Spring '09 runways too. Not to be ignored, are the tailored white sports jackets, belted trench coats and perfectly creased fedoras, Humphrey Bogart's character modeled throughout the film. Very 007. And also right on time for Spring.

#5. FLASHDANCE
This sweatshirt pretty much says it all. With its scissored-off collar and cuffs, it singlehandedly validated the homemade fashion experiments of every American teenage fashionista who grew up in the '80s -- including Jennifer Lopez. (Remember her video for I'm Glad?) It was also proof positive that fashion could be sexy and comfortable.
We like to think it was the predecessor to the Juicy tracksuit, Norma Kamali activewear and Diesel's chic take on sweats.
